Noise measurements in the interior of rail bound vehicles are carried out according to the specifications of ISO 3381. This international standard defines methods for measuring and evaluating interior noise to ensure that the acoustic conditions meet comfort and safety requirements. Microphones are placed at defined positions in the vehicle interior, such as seating and aisles.
Scope of application:
The goal of ISO 3381 is to provide unified procedures for measuring and evaluating interior noise. These are used by vehicle manufacturers, operators and authorities to verify compliance with regulations and approvals and to ensure passenger comfort.

ISO 3381 is applicable to various types of rail vehicles, including:
- high-speed trains
- passenger trains
- freight trains
- trams
- metros
Operating conditions
The measurements include various operational scenarios:
- Starting noise: noise emissions when starting the vehicle
- Driving noise: noise emissions at a constant speed
- Braking noise: noise emissions when braking
- Stationary noise: noise emissions at a standstill, e.g. from air conditioning systems or fans
The combination of imc WAVE and imc FAMOS provides you with a precise, standards-compliant and efficient solution for interior noise measurement according to ISO 3381.
How to measure noise in rail vehicles in accordance with ISO 3381
Noise measurements in rail vehicles are carried out in accordance with the specifications of ISO 3381 to determine the sound level inside the vehicle under real operating conditions. The measurements are used to assess comfort, safety and noise reduction in accordance with standards.
Placement of microphones:
Microphones are placed in the passenger compartment in accordance with ISO 3381 in defined seating positions. They are typically placed at the ear height of a seated passenger. Additional microphones can be placed in the driver's cab or other relevant areas.

Measurement setup and sensors calibration

Measuring software and data acquisition system :
imc WAVE is used for control and data acquisition of the acoustic data. The microphones are connected to an imc measurement system that records high-resolution audio data. The microphones are calibrated before the measurement to ensure accuracy.
The measurements are carried out under realistic operating conditions, e.g.:
- Standstill: Noise level in the vehicle with the engine switched off and on.
- Start-up: Acoustic evaluation during vehicle acceleration.
- Constant speed: Measurement at defined speeds on straight sections of roadway.
- Braking: Recording of the sound level during vehicle braking.
- Tunnels & bridges: Analysis of environmental influences on the noise level in the interior.
Record the various measurements
During the test drive, imc WAVE records the acoustic signals synchronously with other operating data (e.g. speed). The real-time display of the raw signal, the sound, the FFT, third-octave or octave levels allows an initial inspection of the level curves. All measurements are stored on the test PC according to the desired specifications.

Data analysis with imc FAMOS
The recorded audio data is imported into imc FAMOS and analyzed automatically. The application calculates a variety of relevant acoustic parameters, including:
- the A-weighted sound pressure level (e.g. LAeq, LAFmax)
- third-octave and octave analyses
- FFT spectra for identifying dominant frequencies

These calculations are performed within the automated imc FAMOS analysis and reporting application.
In addition, the raw signals of the measurements are used to calculate sound pressure levels and third-octave spectra in decibels (dB). The imc WAVE software not only enables the acquisition of raw data, but also online analysis and generation of standard-compliant reports immediately after the measurement.

Users can compare sound levels under different operating conditions and create standard-compliant reports and graphics. This is possible either directly in imc FAMOS or by exporting the data to Excel for further analysis.

Based on the analysis results, recommendations for noise reduction can also be derived in order to develop targeted measures to minimize noise sources.
